Toyota has been developing fuel cell technology for over 25 years. We launched the first mass-produced fuel cell vehicle, the Toyota Mirai, in 2014 in Japan and 2015 in the US, and have now over 8,500 in operation worldwide. We are also working on the Sora bus and a medium-duty delivery truck in Japan, and a Class 8 heavy-duty truck in the US, among other activities. Fuel cells are a key technology for decarbonizing transportation and an early step to integrate hydrogen in a decarbonized economy as a whole.

Hitachi has been developing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for mobility and industrial uses and focusing on developments of technologies to solve major issues of LIBs: safety, energy density, and lifetime. In this presentation, we will introduce our recent progress on the development of a high capacity (100Wh) and high energy density (600 Wh/L) LIBs by employing quasi-solid-state electrolyte for ensuring their safety.

We have a technology roadmap to achieve 630 Wh/kg, 1300 Wh/L.

We will address how simulation would assist in minimizing the research, analysis, and experiments to analyze the behavior of battery systems where there is need for strongly coupled resolution of flow, heat transfer, electrochemistry, and stress due to expansion and contraction during operation to provide the best possible prediction.
